Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse……

You set down the classic poem by Clement Clark Moore.  “A Visit From St. Nicholas”, better known as “The Night Before Christmas”, was first published anonymously in 1823, and has become synonymous with Christmas.

You’re sipping eggnog on the rocks, wearing your ugly Christmas sweater, while your children bounce off the walls, excited for their expected bounty the next morning.  They’ve eaten their share of candy and sweets, and have set out a plate of cookies for santa, and carrots for the reindeer.  A glass of milk is poured and set in the fridge, so as not to spoil, and a letter to Santa has been left next to the aforementioned North Pole’s Christmas fuel.  The children sign the card in standard Crayola, with careful instructions and a kind gesture to remember the cold glass of milk left for Santa in the refrigerator.

It’s time for the children to go to bed.  You tuck them in, and they forcefully close their eyes.  Soon sugar plums, will be dancing through their heads.  Returning to your chair, you take a moment to think about your week.  The first sign of the holiday break, was when the receptionist let out a cheer, “Everyone- Sparkling Clean will soon be here!”

 8:14 AM: He walked toward the coffee room, coughing with his mouth agape as he poured his morning brew into his “RATHER BE GOLFING” mug.  He yawned, rubbing his hand across his mouth, and then gingerly swiped the underside of his eye, removing some residual crust from his deep slumber.  Cup in tow, he staggered back towards his cubicle.

On the way there, he decided to make way over to his colleague’s desk.  She had Halloween themed sugar cookies and sent an email, encouraging everyone to come by her desk to take one.  He did.  He devoured the cookie, leaving crumbs in his wake.  He then proceeded to lick his fingers, and then walked back to his desk.  As he approached the desk, he set his coffee down and decided that he should first go to the washroom, before returning to his work.

After, shall we say- 10 industrious minutes in the washroom, he was ready to get back to his work.  He was in the washroom and left, without almost anyone knowing he’d been there.  Now- normally, that’d be a good thing.  Except in this case, it wasn’t.  He didn’t wash his hands afterwards.  And now that he’s back at his desk, he’s done enough to create a Jackson Pollock of bacterial fingerprints, for anyone willing to take a black light to the work space.

My desk is covered with papers.  Stacks of papers.  Post-It notes strewn about, with files that I have yet to catalogue and put away.  It’s organized chaos, but it’s messy, not dirty.  While staying overnight at a hotel, I may be shuffling through my suitcase and my toiletries, leaving my belongings in disarray.  If one were to see these messes, they may decide to internalize a drugstore psychology, usually reserved for columns or quizzes in tabloid magazines at supermarket checkout lanes.  This isn’t filth, after all.  It’s a mess.  One that we can all agree to turn a blind eye to and live with.

It’s our mess.  But what happens when the mess is visible to the public, or to internal customers (staff)?  Does it reduce our perceptions of professionalism and order in the workplace?  Do we make assumptions based on these impressions, that this is not a place of order, and that perhaps the management doesn’t have a handle on things?  If they’re this messy, then how filthy is the business likely to be?
